Low-expansion foam for windows and doors
Five low-expansion foams, so the bead does not bow the frame. Compare cold weather range, cure time and yield, then call the counter for today's stock.
A foam built for a window or door frame is rated low-expansion or low-pressure, so it will not push the frame out of square as it cures. Cranco carries five: SoudaFoam Door & Window, Sika Boom AS-PRO, Hilti CF 812 WD, Hilti CF-I XTW and TremGlaze LEF.
Will low-expansion foam bow a window or door frame?
None of the five is rated to bow the frame. Each manufacturer's own sheet says so directly: SoudaFoam D&W's sheet says low expansion, will not bow or bend window and door frames, and gives no shrink and no post expansion; Sika's sheet describes AS-PRO's low expansion as built into the product; and Hilti's own low-pressure line, CF 812 WD and CF-I XTW, is tested to AAMA 812, the standard written for exactly this question.
Which foam works in cold weather?
Hilti's own sheet puts CF-I XTW down to -15 °C, the coldest of the five on record, and Sika's sheet puts AS-PRO at -12 °C. Hilti's own comparison moves a contractor from CF 812 WD, whose sheet starts at 5 °C, to CF-I XTW below that. SoudaFoam D&W's sheet gives 41 to 95 °F and TremGlaze LEF's sheet gives 14 to 94 °F (-10 to 35 °C). Soudal's own cold-weather can, Soudafoam All Season, extrudes to -13 °F on its sheet but is not a window-and-door foam and is not on this page.
Which foam yields the most from one can?
Hilti's sheet rates CF-I XTW at up to 1.9 cubic feet, the most Cranco has on record for a window-and-door can, ahead of CF 812 WD's 1.3 cubic feet on its own sheet. Sika's sheet rates AS-PRO at about 40 litres, roughly 1.4 cubic feet, from a 750 mL can. SoudaFoam D&W's sheet gives a different yield per can size: the 12 oz straw can 4.9 gallons of cured foam, the 20 oz Genius Gun can 6.6 gallons, and the 24 oz gun can 11 gallons.
