How to Use Expanding Foam Around Windows and Doors

Posted

For a window or door frame, use low-pressure foam made for the opening, work on a clean joint within the stated temperature range, allow it to cure, then cover it from sunlight and driving rain.

TremGlaze LEF is Tremco’s low-pressure polyurethane foam for window, door and retrofit installations. Its sheet gives the job’s key limits: -10 to 35°C for application, 45 minutes before cutting and 24 hours to full cure under test conditions.

The data sheet does not replace the directions on the can. Read those before dispensing, especially the nozzle or gun setup and safety instructions for the package you have.

Six steps for a window or door joint

  • Confirm the gap is around a window or door frame and that low-pressure foam is appropriate.
  • Remove loose material and contamination so the foam goes onto a clean surface.
  • Check both air and surface temperature. Do not install TremGlaze LEF below -10°C (14°F).
  • Read the can directions and follow the package-specific dispensing and safety instructions.
  • Let the foam cure before trimming. The sheet lists 45 minutes to cutting and 24 hours to full cure at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.
  • Cover exterior foam so it is not directly exposed to UV or driving rain.

Where Tremco says it can go

Tremco lists window and door frame joints, spaces beneath base plates and mud sills, T-joints, top-plate penetrations, corner joists, exterior cracks and gaps around utility panels, pipes and ducts.

For this guide, the useful distinction is pressure: TremGlaze LEF is described as low pressure and designed for window and door installations.

Do not confuse tack-free, cutting and full cure

StageTime
Tack-free10 minutes
Cutting time45 minutes
Full cure24 hours

These are three different milestones. Tack-free describes the surface. Cutting time is the published point for trimming. Full cure is the complete cure time under the stated test conditions. Cold or different site conditions can change real timing.

Temperature and exposure limits

  • Application range: -10 to 35°C (14 to 94°F).
  • Do not install when ambient or surface temperature is below -10°C (14°F).
  • Use only in well-ventilated areas.
  • Protect the cured foam from direct UV and driving rain.
  • Store the can cool and dry, away from open flame and below 49°C (120°F).

Measure the joint before ordering

The source sheet does not give a coverage-per-can figure. Measure the total joint length plus the approximate width and depth. Those dimensions, together with the package on hand, are what Cranco needs to estimate quantity.

Do not treat a generic “windows per can” number as reliable without the actual joint dimensions and product yield.

Expanding foam questions

What temperature can I use TremGlaze LEF at? Tremco lists an application range of -10 to 35°C (14 to 94°F) and says not to install below -10°C ambient or surface temperature.

When can I trim TremGlaze LEF? The data sheet lists 45 minutes to cutting at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. It lists 10 minutes tack-free and 24 hours to full cure under the same conditions.

Can expanding foam stay exposed outdoors? Tremco says TremGlaze LEF must be protected from direct UV and driving rain.

How many windows does one can cover? The source sheet does not publish coverage per can. Measure the joint length, width and depth and confirm the package and yield before ordering.
