How do you remove Flextra caulk?
Posted
Start with whether the caulk has dried, then check what’s underneath it.
Has the Flextra dried yet? Mulco specifies mineral spirits for cleanup while it’s still wet. Once it’s dry, use a putty knife with mineral spirits or another effective solvent. A stronger solvent isn’t the first thing to try: Mulco warns it may damage surrounding surfaces.
The Flextra sheet tells you how to remove the sealant, but it doesn’t say mineral spirits are safe on every finish. Cleaning vinyl siding or a painted window frame? Check that surface manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before you pick a solvent.
Still fresh? Use the before-drying instructions

For a fresh smear or spill, use mineral spirits as directed in Mulco’s cleaning instructions. Don’t substitute the sheet’s soapy-water preparation instructions for this step; those address cleaning solvent-sensitive surfaces before application.
Before starting, read the product label, Safety Data Sheet and cleaner instructions. Mulco calls for ventilation, eye protection and chemical-resistant, impervious gloves. Keep flames and spark sources away, and don’t smoke.
For dried caulk, work with a putty knife and solvent
Use a putty knife to remove dried Flextra, together with mineral spirits or another effective solvent. Work carefully at the surface rather than assuming a stronger cleaner will do the job without damage.
Mulco doesn’t specify a solvent soaking time, a blade type or a universal alternative solvent. If the remaining material won’t come off without risking the finish, ask the surface manufacturer or Mulco technical services before proceeding.
Replacing the bead? Finish preparing the joint
Remove the old sealant or putty first. Mulco calls for that before you apply Flextra, and you need a firm, clean surface for the new bead. Clear away oil, grease, wax, silicone, rust and loose material, along with the other contaminants listed in Mulco’s preparation instructions.
Don’t use the sheet’s acetone instruction for vinyl. That instruction covers new metal and solvent-resistant oily surfaces. For vinyl and other solvent-sensitive surfaces, the preparation steps are to wash with soapy water, rinse, then let the surface dry.
Only trying to clean a discoloured bead?
Cleaning the surface of a dried bead is a different job from removing it. For yellowed, greyed or faded Flextra where a contaminant may have deposited, Mulco specifies a vinyl-surface cleaner containing sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), or another strong water-based cleaner.
For replacement product details, see [Mulco Flextra](/mulco-flextra/). If removal is the sticking point, send Cranco the surface material, finish and whether the caulk is fresh or dried.
