Can you apply Flextra in the rain?
Check whether rain will hit the finished bead or wet the surfaces you still need to seal.
Mulco lists Flextra as rain resistant immediately after application. That doesn’t mean you can apply it to a wet joint. Its preparation instructions require washing and drying metal and vinyl surfaces, and the sheet gives no permission to apply over rainwater. If rain is wetting the joint before you caulk, wait until you can prepare it as directed.
Flextra dries as its solvent evaporates, so temperature, relative humidity and ventilation affect how long it takes. Rain resistance isn’t the same as being fully dry. If you’ve applied the bead to properly prepared surfaces, the sheet gives no waiting period before rain exposure.
Before you start, check the joint itself
Start by reading the product label and Safety Data Sheet, and follow both when you work. Eye protection and chemical-resistant, impervious gloves are needed, along with a well-ventilated work area. No smoking, flames or spark sources nearby. Strip out old sealant or putty, then remove any loose material. You need firm, clean surfaces with no oil, grease, wax, silicone, rust or other contaminants listed in the sheet.
New metal or an oily surface that can take solvent? Mulco calls for acetone, then drying. With vinyl or dirty plastics that are sensitive to solvent, use soapy water instead, rinse and let them dry. Concrete and masonry need brushing until you have a sound, firm, clean surface.
Keep the product within its listed application range of 5–30°C; the surface range is −30–40°C. Below 5°C, you also need to check the dew point. The surface must be at least 3°C above it, with no frost or ice.
Apply the bead without tooling it
Check the opening width before you choose the backing rod. At 6 mm or wider, Mulco requires polyethylene backing rod approximately 3 mm wider than the opening, so the rod compresses as you fit it.
Make a square cut across the nozzle, leaving it slightly narrower than the bead you want, then pierce the cartridge seal. As you lay the bead, keep steady pressure on the gun and pull the tip away from the joint at roughly 45°. You need a convex bead, with at least 3 mm of contact on each surface.
Don’t smooth or tool Flextra afterward. Mulco specifically warns against forming it after application because this can create tension during drying.
Where the rain-resistance statement stops
Rain resistance isn’t a rating for standing water. Flextra is for exterior use only, and Mulco excludes prolonged submersion and floor joints exposed to abrasion.
Don’t substitute a skin-time estimate or another sealant’s rain-ready time. Flextra’s October 2021 sheet states immediate rain resistance but gives no fixed full-drying time or procedure for applying to rain-wet surfaces. For a joint that keeps getting wet during preparation, ask Mulco Technical Services at 1-866-660-2220 before proceeding.
