Does DOWSIL 795 need primer?
Start with the surface you’re sealing, then confirm adhesion with a test placement.
DOWSIL 795 generally doesn’t need primer on non-porous surfaces, but certain porous surfaces may need it. Dow always recommends a test placement. So don’t treat its unprimed adhesion claim as permission to skip testing on your job. The supplied data sheet doesn’t name a primer or give a test procedure and acceptance criteria.
Check the actual surface before ordering primer
What will the bead bond to? Record the substrate and any coating or finish, rather than ordering from the sealant name alone.
For a non-porous surface, Dow’s starting point is generally no primer. For a porous surface, leave the primer decision open until you’ve confirmed the requirements for that material and completed the recommended test placement.
The sheet lists weather-sealing uses that include glass, aluminum, painted metal, stone, concrete and brick. That application list doesn’t settle the primer question for every surface. Its application instructions still call for a test placement.
Clean the joint, then arrange the test
Before handling, read the product and safety data sheets and container labels for safe use and physical and health hazard information. Dow tells you to remove grease, oil, dust, water, frost, surface dirt, old sealant or glazing compounds, and protective coatings from the joint. Don’t skip that preparation because you plan to use primer.
Before committing to the full run, ask Dow or your supplier to confirm the primer recommendation, test method and acceptance criteria for the substrate and finish you’ve recorded. The supplied sheet recommends testing but doesn’t provide enough detail to invent a pass-or-fail check.
Once the preparation and primer decision are settled, Dow’s application sequence includes installing backing material or joint filler and masking beside the joint. Apply the sealant continuously with positive pressure, tool it before a skin forms, and remove the tape as soon as the bead is tooled.
Primer doesn’t remove the job limits
Wet or frosted joint? DOWSIL 795 excludes those surfaces. The sheet also excludes installation when the surface temperature exceeds 50°C, and use on materials that bleed oils, plasticizers or solvents that may affect adhesion.
For structural work, Dow requires prior review and approval by its local sales application engineer. A primer decision or test placement doesn’t replace that requirement.
