What caulk can you use in cold weather?
Check the application temperature first. Then check your surface and joint.
You can apply TREMPRO 830+ for exterior caulking down to −7°C (20°F), as Tremco permits. Any outdoor gap? No—the listed uses include siding details and the perimeters of wood, PVC and aluminum windows and doors. Check surface preparation and joint size before you use it, even when the temperature is within that allowance.
Check which temperature the sheet means
For TREMPRO 830+, the application range is −7°C to 37.8°C (20°F to 120°F). Tremco generally recommends air temperatures of at least 5°C (40°F) before applying sealants, but gives this product the lower application limit.
What about the cartridges in the truck? The sheet says to store the product below 80°F in a dry place, but doesn’t give a minimum cartridge temperature for application. It also doesn’t provide a numerical cured-service temperature range. Don’t use that storage instruction as a cartridge-warming target or assume a service rating permits cold installation.
If colder weather is imminent, the sheet directs you to Tremco’s Cold Weather Applications guide. That guide isn’t included here, so this article doesn’t establish permission to apply below −7°C or a procedure for colder conditions.
A cold-weather rating doesn’t settle surface preparation
Check the exact version before buying. The coloured TREMPRO 830+ sheet advertises adhesion to wet or damp surfaces, yet its preparation section still calls for a sound, clean, dry surface. The clear and translucent sheet also requires a sound, clean, dry surface. For a damp joint, get Tremco’s clarification for the version and substrate you’ll use.
Check the joint dimensions before you lay a bead. Butt joints under ¼ inch wide are excluded, as are joints exceeding ½ inch wide by ½ inch deep; the sheet recommends a ¼- to ⅜-inch bead. For depth over ½ inch, it calls for foam backer rod. You still have to stay within the stated joint limits—backer rod doesn't change those.
Prepare the joint, then leave the bead alone
Remove loose dirt, dust, oils and other contaminants from the contact surfaces. Follow the sheet’s requirement for a sound, clean, dry surface before applying.
Apply a convex bead that contacts both surfaces, fill the joint without gaps and avoid tooling. TREMPRO 830+ is self-tooling; the sheet says shrinkage during cure leaves a flat or concave bead.
Need to paint it? TREMPRO 830+ is paintable after cure. The supplied sheets don’t give a full-cure time for cold weather, so don’t schedule painting from a skin-time figure.
Before you order
TREMPRO 830+ isn’t recommended for continuous underwater use, below-grade applications or filling surface defects.
Open the [TREMPRO 830+ product details](/trempro-830-plus/) and check the sheet for the version you intend to buy. If the choice is still unclear, send Cranco the substrate, joint width and depth, expected air temperature, surface condition and painting requirement. Ask specifically about cartridge conditioning and any colder weather expected after application.
