Best Way To Caulk Baseboards

The short answer

For indoor baseboards, use a paintable acrylic latex caulk with silicone. It takes paint well. Clean it with water while wet. It flexes enough for normal house movement. DAP ALEX PLUS works for this. Its data sheet lists baseboards, molding, and trim. You can paint it with latex or oil paint after 30 minutes.

Don't just grab silicone for this job. Most silicone sealants won't take paint. A silicone bead on a baseboard leaves a shiny line you can't cover. Use silicone for wet areas or joints you won't paint.

What you need before you start

Get a tube or cartridge of paintable acrylic latex caulk with silicone. If you use a cartridge, grab a caulking gun. You'll also need a utility knife to cut the nozzle, a tool or your finger to finish the bead, a damp sponge, and painter's tape if you want straight lines. For gaps deeper than 1/2 inch, get backer rod.

The joint has to be clean, dry, structurally sound and free of all foreign material. That means dust from sanding, loose paint, old caulk that has failed, and any oil or grease. On new trim, vacuum or brush the gap before you run the bead. On a repaint, cut out the old bead rather than caulking over it.

The method, in order

Cut the nozzle tip at a 45-degree angle. Make the opening for the bead size you want. Start small; you can always cut more. Load the cartridge into your caulking gun, or take the cap off the squeeze tube.

Lay the bead where the baseboard meets the wall. Gap at the floor? Run one there too. Hold steady pressure and keep your angle the same. A deep gap doesn't need one full fill. Use backer rod for that.

DAP ALEX PLUS gives a 10-minute working time. Tool the bead within that window, before it skins. Don't sit on it. A finishing tool or wet finger pulls the bead concave. You want a shadow line, not a bulge. After each pass, wipe the tool. Wet excess? Damp sponge, same 10-minute window. Once dry, plan on cutting or scraping it off.

Paint, cure and the numbers that matter

ALEX PLUS can take paint after 30 minutes, per the data sheet. That applies to latex and oil-based paint. Cool or damp job? Wait longer. The bead is tack-free at 30 minutes. Full dry and ready to use: 24 hours. In a cold or damp room, treat 30 minutes as the shortest wait.

Apply this caulk only when air temp is 40°F to 100°F. After cure, it handles -20°F to 180°F. That cured range is service temperature, not application temperature. Skip the job if rain or freezing weather is coming in the next 24 hours.

Before buying, compare bead yield by size. One 10.1 fl oz cartridge lays about 55 linear feet at a 3/16 inch bead. A 5.5 fl oz tube lays about 30 linear feet at that same bead size. Measure the baseboard run, then add waste. Shelf life is 12 months. Reseal what's left and store it correctly. That keeps leftovers usable.

Mistakes that show up later

Caulking over a dirty or damp joint is the most common failure. The bead looks fine on day one and pulls away within a season. Clean and dry first, every time.

Filling a gap that is too big. The sheet caps joint size at 1/2 inch wide by 1/2 inch deep, and says to use backer rod material if joint depth exceeds 1/2 inch. A deep gap filled with caulk alone will sag or crack. Backer rod supports the bead and controls its depth. It also keeps the sealant from bonding to the back of the joint, so the bead can move with the two sides.

Painting too soon is a problem. Painting before the product is ready can spoil the finish. Wait 30 minutes. Cold or humid room? Wait longer. Check your paint, too. The data sheet covers latex and oil-based paint, not every coating on the shelf.

Where this product stops working

ALEX PLUS is not for continuous underwater use, filling butt joints, surface defects, tuck-pointing or expansion joints. A baseboard joint is none of those, which is why the product fits. If your job is one of those, you need a different sealant and a different sheet.

This caulk won't stick to copper or copper alloys. It also won't stick well to plastics like polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, PMMA, or PTFE. Test it on unusual materials first. For a standard painted drywall and wood baseboard joint, this isn't an issue.
