Which sealant can you use around self-cleaning glass?
Check the glass and the joint before ordering a tube.
TremGlaze U1600 is one option: Tremco’s data sheet lists compatibility with self-cleaning glass applications and use in back-bedding and window and door installation. It isn’t for use as an insulated glass sealant. Before you specify it, confirm the intended joint with the glass supplier and test adhesion on the actual job materials.
Start with where the bead goes
Give the glass supplier the glass product name, coating details, frame material and a drawing or photo showing the proposed bead. Ask whether TremGlaze U1600 is acceptable at that location.
The sheet’s self-cleaning-glass compatibility statement doesn’t identify individual glass brands or coatings. Don’t treat it as approval for every glass assembly, or use it to bypass the insulated-glass restriction.
Test before deciding on primer
Tremco lists adhesion to wood, vinyl, aluminum and glass. It also recommends a field adhesion test on the actual materials to establish primer, cleaning and preparation needs, even though U1600 typically adheres to common construction substrates without primer.
Ask the installer to complete that check before ordering the full quantity. A general substrate name such as aluminum doesn’t settle the preparation for your particular frame.
Prepare and fill the joint
Don’t apply U1600 over wet or contaminated surfaces. Follow the preparation established by the adhesion test.
For a joint using backer rod, Tremco instructs you to friction-fit it properly and apply any required primer. Fill the joint completely at the proper width-to-depth ratio, then tool the bead into contact with the joint walls. Dry tooling is preferred.
The sheet doesn’t give a numerical joint ratio. Get the required dimensions for your assembly before starting.
