Is sealant flammable during application?

Posted

For Mulco Supra Expert, the manufacturer gives separate warnings for application and the dry sealant.

Yes, Mulco Supra Expert can catch fire during application, and the manufacturer’s technical sheet calls it combustible when dry. Before you schedule the job, check that product’s label and safety data sheet (SDS) for handling precautions. Using another exterior sealant? Check its own documents.

Dry doesn’t mean noncombustible

Supra Expert is for exterior use only. The sheet lists joints around door and window frames, siding and glass in window frames, and gives a flash point of 28°C (82°F). If you’re buying it for an exterior window joint, review that figure together with the application warning.

Don’t use paintability time or a bead that looks dry to decide when you can stop taking ignition precautions. Combustible even when dry—that’s how the sheet describes the sealant. It lists neither a time after application when those precautions can end nor a fire-resistance rating.

The service-temperature range answers a different question

Check both temperatures before you apply Supra Expert. The sheet allows 5°C to 30°C for the product itself, while the surface can be −30°C to 40°C. For service, the listed range is −40°C to 50°C.

The 50°C maximum is for service temperature. It doesn’t give you permission to apply the sealant near heat or ignition sources. Keep each range tied to the use stated on the sheet.

Check the safety instructions before opening cartridges

Before work starts, compare the product name on your cartridge with the technical sheet, label and SDS. They need to match. Then use the manufacturer’s safety instructions to check the planned work area, including any nearby hot work. If you’re still unsure whether you can proceed, get an answer from the manufacturer before starting.

The October 2021 technical sheet used here doesn’t specify ventilation requirements, ignition-source separation distances or a safe waiting period for hot work. Get those answers rather than choosing a distance or delay from this guide.

When requesting safety guidance, give the exact product name, where you’ll apply it and what other work is planned nearby.
